Rima Kallingal is an Indian Actress, model, television anchor, Dancer and Choreographer. She predominantly works in Malayalam film industry. She also appeared in some Tamil films and Malayalam TV shows. Rima Kallingal was the First Runner-up in the Miss Kerala 2008 contest. Later, she went on to pursue a career in acting and made her debut in the Malayalam film Ritu as Varsha John. The film receives the critics’ acclaim and earned her an Asianet Award for Best Actress. Rima is one of the founding members of Women in Cinema Collective, the organization for the welfare of women workers of Malayalam movie industry. Rima Kallingal Profile and Career

Rima Kallingal was born on 19 January 1984 in Thrissur, Kerala, India. She is a dancer by profession who began practising dancing when she was three years old. She has performed on national and international stages. Rima did her schooling up to Fifth grade in Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, Coonoor and completed her schooling from Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Thrissur, Kerela. Later, She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Christ University, Bangalore. She is also skilled in Taekwondo (Korean martial art), Chao (Manipuri martial art) and Kalari.

She was a semi-finalist of the Asianet reality show Vodafone Thakadhimi. She moved to Bangalore to pursue a modelling career and later participated in the Miss Kerala 2008 beauty pageant and became the First Runner-up in the contest.

Rima Kallingal was spotted by director Lal Jose on a magazine cover, who cast her for a goat herder role in a Tamil film Mazhai Varappoguthu. The film didn’t materialise and failed in the box office. Later, Director Shyamaprasad offered her as the lead female character in the Malayalam film Ritu.

In 2013, Rima Kallingal was married to director Aashiq Abu in a simple ceremony held in Kakkanad Registration office, Kochi. As part of the occasion, the couple had donated Rs 1 million for the welfare of poor cancer patients at the General Hospital, Ernakulam. Also, they offered Rs 25,000 to meet a day’s expense of the dietary kitchen at the hospital.

Rima has stated that she would continue to act in films after marriage. She also said on a social networking site prior to her wedding that she would not be wearing any gold for the function as a protest against the dowry system.

Recently, at a TEDx talk in Thiruvananthapuram, Rima spoke about the gender disparity in the Malayalam film industry and about how men are given well-crafted roles and that women are often neglected.
