Latha Rajinikanth was born on 3 March 1958 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She was graduated with a Master of Arts degree in English literature from Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai in 1980. She started her career as a singer in the Tamil film industry. She is the sister-in-law of veteran playwright Y Gee Mahendran. Her brother Ravi Raghavendra is also an actor who is the father of popular music director Anirudh Ravichander.
During her college days, Latha interviewed Rajinikanth for a magazine. Later, she became an ardent fan of actor Rajinikanth and met him during one of his shooting. Rajinikanth greeted her pleasantly, and the two chatted for a while. Latha was married to Rajinikanth on 26 February 1981 in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The couple has two daughters named Aishwarya Rajinikanth and Soundarya Rajinikanth. Her elder daughter, Aishwarya Rajinikanth married actor Dhanush in 2004 and they have two sons named Yathra and Linga. In 2010, her younger daughter Soundarya married Chennai-based Industrialist Ashwin Ramkumar and the couple gave birth to a son named Ved Krishna.
