In the year 1993, he attended an extracurricular training class for gifted students at the state mathematical olympiad program, and at the age of 11, he played at the 24th International Physics Olympiad in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he won a bronze medal.
Later he switched his attention towards mathematics, once after he placed second in the Australian Mathematical Olympiad and he won the silver medal in the 6th Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad. It was held before he won the bronze medal at the 1994 International Mathematical Olympiad which was held in Hong Kong. He has done his secondary education at the age of 13, and he joined in the University of Western Australia as a youngest ever student, then he completed his four years course in three years, and he is the only 16 years boy who earns First Class Honours in pure mathematics from the University. Later he was awarded the J. A. Woods Memorial Prize as a most outstanding graduand of the year from the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Dentistry, or Medical Science. In the year 1998, he did his PhD at Princeton University under Peter Sarnak, and he completed it in 2002 in that he produced his thesis Limiting forms of the trace formula.
Akshay Venkatesh was supported by Hackett Fellowship for postgraduate study and he awarded as a postdoctoral position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He made his contributions to the variety of area in mathematics that include number theory, automorphic forms, representation theory, locally symmetric spaces and ergodic theory, by himself. Then he joined with Jordan Ellenberg and used the ergodic methods and made an important step on the Hasse principle for integral representations of quadratic forms by quadratic forms and more. Moreover, he is the only Australian who won the medals at both the International Physics Olympiad and International Mathematical Olympiad at the age of 12.
