How to Check if Your Pan Card is Active or Deactivated

In line with the recent move wherein the government has deactivated 13 Lakh fake PAN cards following identity theft, more people are keen to check if their PAN card is still active or has been deactivated. But the matter of deactivation aside, you may also want to verify your PAN details in case you are planning to apply for a duplicate PAN card because the original one is lost or damaged.

Below are some steps with the help of which you can know whether your PAN card is still active:

Step 1: To initiate the process, visit https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal website. It is the income tax department’s official website that is used to file income tax returns.

Step 2: Go to the “Verify Your PAN Details” option available on the left-hand side of the homepage.

Step 3: You’ll be then directed to the next page wherein you are required to fill out the form that will require you to mention your PAN Number, Full Name, Date of Birth, Status, and Captcha Code.

Step 4: Click on the “Submit” button.

Step 5: Your computer screen will then display whether your PAN card is active or deactivated. If your PAN card is active, you will see the message “PAN is Active and the details are matching with PAN database“.

A PAN Card or the Permanent Account Number serves as a Universal Identity Card for a variety of purposes. It is an essential prerequisite for quite a lot of government-based services including Provident Fund, Passport, LPG and other subsidies, Pension scheme, to name a few. Also, it is required to open a bank or DEMAT account and PAN has to be provided for all transactions over and above Rs 50,000/-. In addition to this, if you want to enroll in the electorate, you need proof of identification. This requirement can be fulfilled with your PAN card. Similarly, if you are applying for an international job, your proof of identity can be your PAN card. The importance of a PAN card in India is so much that even minors and NRIs having tax-paying income in India are required to have a PAN card.

The Government of India also gives cardholders the privilege to apply for a duplicate PAN if the original is lost, stolen, misplaced, or damaged. You can also get your PAN details rectified when there is incorrect information printed on the card such as your name, etc. that needs to be rectified.

The process to Get a Duplicate Copy of the PAN Card

Whether you are an individual entity or a member of Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), you can get a duplicate copy of your PAN card in case the original one is stolen, lost, or misplaced. But before you begin with this process, don’t forget to file an FIR of the same. Next, you will have to raise a request, to reprint your PAN by providing your PAN number along with an FIR copy of your lost PAN. You can check the status by Application type and acknowledgment number of your PAN Card.  Easy steps to get a duplicate copy of PAN card include:-

Step 1: Visit the TIN-NSDL website of the I-T department.

Step 2: Go to the “reprint of PAN Card” option available on the home page of the website.

Step 3: Select the “Apply” tab and choose the type of PAN card you want to reprint or get a duplicate copy of.

Step 4: You will be then directed to a page wherein you are required to fill out a form with personal details including your name, mobile number, permanent account number, email ID, etc.

Step 5: Submit the duly filled form with all supporting documents such as your identity proof, date of birth proof, photographs, and proof of your old PAN card that you want to reprint or get a duplicate copy of.

Step 6: Make payment. This is a one-time fee that includes no hidden charges.

Step 7: Once the payment is done and all the supporting documents are submitted, you will receive a letter of acceptance from the authorities. It will have a unique 15-digit number that can be used to track your lost PAN card application.

Step 8: Ideally, it would take 15 days for your duplicate PAN card to reach your communication address by post.

Online Procedure to re-print the PAN Card

Many times, a duplicate copy of PAN may take a long time to reach your communication address. Meanwhile, you can print the e-PAN and use it in place of the original PAN card. It is a big relief for those who actually face a tough time when their original PAN card gets lost and a duplicate copy of it takes more time to reach their communication address. To print the e-PAN, you must follow the below-mentioned steps:-

  1. Log in and register on http://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com.
  2. Duly fill out the form that appears on the computer screen with essential details like your name, mobile number, email ID and submit it.
  3. Once the form is submitted, the e-copy of your PAN card will be sent to you on your email ID in PDF format, which you can download and use it just like the original PAN card till the duplicate copy reaches you.

The importance of a PAN card is such that one cannot make most financial transactions without a PAN card. This is the reason why the government has made several good alternatives for the genuine PAN cardholders to apply for a duplicate copy of PAN or print e-PAN and use it for different purposes. One important thing to note here is that a Permanent Account Number allotted to one person remains the same throughout in the original, duplicate or e-PAN.
