National Technology Day 2020: Timeline, Significance and Theme
National Technology Day 2020: Since 1999, May 11 of every year is celebrated as National Technology Day in India to honor the technological advancements in India. The reason behind the celebration of National Technology Day is that, on May 11, 1988, India successfully tested its nuclear bombsĀ in Pohran, Rajasthan to exhibit its defensive skills. While it was India’s second nuclear test, the Shakti-I nuclear missile was tested at the IndiaĀ Army’s Pokhran Test Range, and the operation was led by an aerospace engineer as well as late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Two days later, India successfully tested two more nuclear weapons which were part ofĀ Pokhran-II/Operation Shakti initiative. Following this, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India, declared the country, a nuclear state to join the “nuclear club” of nations.
Theme of National Technology Day: This year there is no specific theme for National Technology 2020. The 2019 theme is Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future.” The main aim of the theme is to promote the development of technology in various fields.
On this day, the Technology Development Board will present National Awards to the persons who had noteworthy achievement in the respective fields. People will be awarded for their contribution and research. Several events honoring technological innovations and discussions will be organized in different institutions.
Timeline of National Technology Day
- On May 11, 1998, India detonated three nuclear bombs at the Pokhran Test range.
- Hansa 3, India’s first indigenous aircraft was first tested on May 11, 1998, in Bangalore.
- On May 11, 1998, India successfully tested the Trishul Missile.
- Based on these achievements, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India, declared May 11 as the National Technology Day.
- From 1999, TDB (Technology Development Board) celebrates May 11 by honoring technological innovations which have impacted India and contributed to indigenous technology.
