Premalatha is the wife of Indian film actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) president, Vijayakanth. He married Premalatha on January 31, 1990, and the couple had two sons named Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. She has emerged as a pillar of support to actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth, who popularly known as Captain. She is a former national-level athlete, shot put and discus throw, and have been participated in many competitions. The former national-level athlete is now a star campaigner for her husband’s party, drawing huge crowds wherever she goes. She started campaigning for her husband after he started the party in 2006. Her stage speeches during election made her to become familiar among Tamil Nadu people. She has been through 11 by-elections and traveled all over Tamil Nadu. She identifies the problems faced by TN people of each area and talks about issues like power cuts, price rise and law and order situations, which impact people.
