World Blood Donor Day 2018: WBDD or World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on every June 14 to raise awareness about the need and importance of donating Blood voluntarily. It is also the day to thank the blood donors for their blood donations. World Blood Donor Day marks the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner who born on 14th of June in 1868. WBDD is one of the 8 official global public health campaigns marked by the WHO (World Health Organisation), along with World Health Day (April 7), World Tuberculosis Day (March 24), World Immunization Week (April 24-30), World Malaria Day (April 25), World Hepatitis Day (July 28), World No Tobacco Day (May 31) and World AIDS Day (December 1).
World Blood Donor Day was first started in 2004 with the aim of raising the public awareness about the need for safe blood donation voluntarily. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and World Health Organization (WHO) in 2004 initiated the celebration of World Blood Donor Day. Then it was officially established by WHO in the year 2005 at the 58th World Health Assembly to motivate the all the countries to thank the blood donors for their valuable step, promote voluntary, safe and unpaid blood donations to assure the sufficient blood supplies. The celebrations of WBDD 2018 brings a precious opportunity for all donors to celebrate the day at the global level as well as to commemorate the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, a scientist who won the Nobel Prize for the discovery of ABO blood group system.
