WhatsApp Sets Limit on Forwarding Messages in India
Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp is launching a test to limit forwarding messages to tackle the spread of fake news and misinformation on its platform. The Facebook-owned application will now enforce a forwarding limit on all messages, videos, photos which are shared. The messaging app in a blog post revealed that,
“In India – where people forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world – we’ll also test a lower limit of 5 chats at once and we’ll remove the quick forward button next to media messages,”
If a media message is forwarded five times from the same account, then after the limit is crossed, WhatsApp will disable the option for forwarding it further.

The private messaging app believes that these changes will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be. The messages on the platform are said to be end-to-end encrypted. On July 10, WhatsApp started indicating with a label, whether messages a user receives were forwarded from someone. This new update is in addition to the changes made to forwarding, in an attempt to avoid fake news and the spread of rumours.
