Statue of Liberty

The world renowned Statue of Liberty is more than a monument. She is referred to be a beloved friend, a living symbol of freedom to the millions of people from around the world. The Statue of Liberty is one of the world’s most recognized symbols of America. It is located at the entrance to New York Harbor on Liberty Island, and it has greeted many people who are coming to the United States. It is still being standing as a symbol for many things today, including freedom and hope. The article deals about the Statue of Liberty, its origin, and its representation.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty originally named as Liberty Enlightening the World, and in French, it is La Liberté éclairant le monde. The white lady is a colossal neoclassical sculpture situated on the Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York City, in the United States of America. It is a 450,000-lb copper statue standing 305 feet above the pedestal base is a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States.

The Liberty Statue is a robed female figure that represents Libertas, the Roman goddess standing upright, dressed in a flowing robe and a spiked crown, holding a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand and a flaming torch held high in her right hand. The Statue of Liberty is made from pure copper on a framework of steel (originally “puddled iron”) except the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf.  A broken chain lies at her feet.

Statue of Liberty

The statue had become an icon of freedom and was a welcoming sight by the United States to the immigrants arriving from abroad. It stands atop a rectangular stonework foundation, itself on an irregular eleven-pointed star foundation. The statue is 151 feet and one inch tall, with the foundation adding another 154 feet. The tablet contains the text as “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776) and thus commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.

The interior of the pedestal contains a bronze plaque inscribed with the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus.  It was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and was built by Gustave Eiffel. The Statue of Liberty had been dedicated on October 28, 1886.

The Statue of Liberty had been the inspiration for countless songs, stories, poems, and memoirs as of its powerful connection to the democracy. Her tiara has seven spikes that represent the seven seas and the seven continents of the world. Statue of Liberty represents about the strong representation of freedom and hope that the Statue has given to the millions of immigrants who have come to America looking for the opportunity and shelter.

In 1865, a group of Frenchmen had come up with the idea of building the Statue of Liberty and thus giving it to the United States as a gift. The United States was a new country during that time with a democratic government that was for the people and by the people. During this period, the French were ruled by an emperor, and they looked to the United States for the inspiration.

What Does Statue of Liberty Represent?

1. Statue of Liberty Represents Democracy

The statue has meant to celebrate democracy, but at the same time, it was supposed to celebrate the friendship between France and The United States, a friendship that was formed during the American Revolutionary War. The American Revolutionary War was fought between 1775 and 1783. England ruled the United States before this time.

The war had happened once after the people of the United States realized that they were not being treated fairly. During the war, the French government gave the United States with the French soldiers, generals and lots of money. The English had many advantages in the war, and in the end, the United States won its independence.

2. Statue of Liberty Represents Friendship

The Statue of Liberty represents many things and one among them is the friendship between nations and freedom from oppression. Before air travel had been started, ships would sail into the New York Harbor and Lady Liberty would welcome their passengers, of which many of them were being immigrants traveling to the United States for the first time. Lady Liberty is considered to be one of the first sites when sailing into the harbor, and she is the symbol of freedom.

3. Statue of Liberty Represents Welcoming Immigrants

Between 1886 and 1924, there were about 14 million immigrants came to the United States through New York. The Lady Liberty holding her torch high in the sky welcomed those new immigrants. Most of the immigrants have come to the United States because their countries do not offer the opportunities as like the United States had offered. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes a new beginning. A poem called “The New Colossus” written by Emma Lazarus was placed on the base of the statue in 1903. The most popular line in the poem is “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

4. Statue of Liberty Represents A symbol of All Time

As the statue of liberty represents an ageless idea, her dress needed to symbolize a timeless quality as well. Her torch, which is held high represents to light the way to a new life, evokes feelings of welcome and assistance. There is also another sense as one coming from a location or attitude of darkness into the hope of a better place. Along with the tools, the ability to create fire is one of the skills that led to civilization as we know it. Fire is the symbol of knowledge, and it brings light to the people.

In this model of the Statue, her broken Chains can be more easily seen. Lady Liberty appears to be walking, and not standing, upon the thrown off chains of bondage and tyranny. Her right foot is raised as if she is continually moving, forever bringing freedom to others. She is stepping forward with the loving confidence. Thus, the Liberty statue tells the people to step ahead from bondage.

Statue of Liberty

The head ware of seven spikes in the Statue of Liberty represents intelligence and the “new ideas” or ancient principles of liberty emanating forth from the America to bless the Inhabitants of the seven continents and seven seas of the earth. The freedom to think and freedom to express oneself coupled with the opportunity for intellectual and property ownership is one of the great blessings of the liberty for the whole world. The crown is reminiscent of a halo, and its spikes show the similarities to those of the sun gods including the Roman Apollo, and the Greek Helios.

Lady Liberty holds a tablet, or a book of laws on her left hand, with the date July 4th, 1776 written on the cover. The book represents the need for laws to help protect freedom. The shape of Lady Liberty’s tablet is an interesting symbolic detail, as it is called a keystone, which is an architectural stone that ““keeps the others together.” i.e., the keystone of this nation is the fact that it is based on law and without law, freedom, and democracy will not prevail.
