Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan is an Indian Musician, Singer, Composer, Author and Professor who is a renowned exponent of Tamil folk art. She devoted her lifetime to research, collection, a revival of the Tamil folk music and dances. She studied the art together with her husband M. Navaneethakrishnan. For her extraordinary contribution to her field, the Government of India has announced Padma Shri, the nation’s fourth highest civilian award, for the year 2018. Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan Profile and Career

Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan was born on 27 January 1946 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. Vijayalakshmi and her husband Navaneethakrishnan worked as a professor in the Department of Folk Arts and Culture at Madurai Kamaraj University. Later, the couple retires from the profession and continued their research and studied folk art and culture.

Along with their group of singers and composers, they conduct performances that are sought after by connoisseurs and lovers of Tamil folk music around the world. The couple has brought out several albums of authentic Tamil folk music.

They have recorded more than 10,000 audio cassettes of authentic folk music and now working towards classifying this extensive collection to generate a Tamil folk music grammar and guide. The couple also plans to compile an encyclopaedia of Tamil folk art.
