US-North Korea 2019: Trump Becomes First US president to Step into North Korea with Kim Jong Un
US president Donald Trump met the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un at Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. He has become the first sitting US president to step into North Korea. The two leaders shook hands warmly and both expressing hopes for peace. Mr Trump also stepped in South to meet president Moon Jae-in with Mr Kim. The leaders held hour-long talks, agreeing to set up negotiating teams to continue discussions.
Earlier on Sunday, Mr. Trump said the two nations had agreed to appoint nuclear negotiating teams that will begin work over the next several weeks.
“We’re not looking for speed. We’re looking to get it right,” he said. “We’re on a very good path. This was a terrific day.”
James Clapper, a former Director of National Intelligence said that Trump stepping into North Korea is a “Great Historic Moment”. Clapper also added that he personally does not believe the North Koreans have long-term any intent to denuclearize.
