Tirupur Honour Killing Case of Dalit youth Shankar | Court Sentences Six Convicts

Tirupur Honour Killing Case: On Tuesday, the Principal District and Sessions court in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu sentenced to death six convicts, including the father-in-law of late Dalit youth Shankar. The court convicted by delivering one of the strongest verdict in a purported ‘honour killing’ case in the country. The victim’s Mother-In-Law has been acquitted. Of the remaining five accused, one was awarded the life sentence, one got a five-year jail term, and three were acquitted. Judge Alamelu Natarajan pronounced the verdict.

Last year, on March 13, V Shankar, a 22-year old Dalit youth who had married Kousalya, a 19-year old non-Dalit girl, was brutally thrashed and hacked to death allegedly by a gang of three men in full public view at the bus stand in Udumalpet, Tirupur.

While Shankar the Dalit youth died on the way to a hospital, Kausalya, who hails from Dindigul district, suffered from head injuries. A video footage of the attack had gone viral triggering public outrage in the state.

The two had fallen in love while studying at a private engineering college in Pollachi and got married against her family’s wishes. After the wedding, they had been living in Kumaralingam. Three months later, a three-member gang hacked the couple. After the investigation, Police had filed a charge sheet against 11 persons, including the girl’s father, going to 1,500 pages. They were accused under Goondas Act, include Kausalya’s parents Chinnasamy and Annalakshmi, her uncle, Pandidurai.

The government appointed U. Sankaranarayanan as the Special Prosecutor for the Honour killing case. The trial in the case was completed in November this year, and the court had posted the case for the pronouncement of verdict on December 12.

Shankar’s father in law was one of the six convicts who was sentenced to death by the local court, out of a total 11 people. While two others were given lesser sentences, three of the accused, including the girl’s mother Annalakshmi, was acquitted of all charges. The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 11.95 lakhs to be given to the victim’s wife and his family.
