Early Life and Career
Suriya was born as Saravanan on 23 July 1975 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He is the eldest son of veteran actor Sivakumar and his wife Lakshmi. He has a younger brother named Karthi, who is also an actor. He attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School inChennai. Suriya completed his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai.
He made his acting debut in the movie Nerukku Ner (1997). Suriya landed his breakthrough role in the movie Nandha (2001) and then had his first major commercial success with the thriller movie Kaakha Kaakha (2003), directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Following award-winning performances of the conman in Pithamagan (2003) and a Hunchback in Perazhagan (2004), Suriya has performed in the 2005 Blockbuster Ghajini. Then he did the dual roles in Gautham Menon’s semi-autobiographical movie Vaaranam Aayiram (2008). His status as the action star was established with the roles of a smuggler in Ayan (2009), and the aggressive cop in the Singam trilogy (Singam, Singam II, and Singam III). Suriya has also found the success of science fiction films like 7aum Arivu (2011), and 24 (2016). In 2017 he has won three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards South.

In 2008, he began Agaram Foundation, which funds various philanthropic activities. Suriya is married to actress Jyothika on 11 September 2006. They have two children, a daughter Diya (born 10 August 2007) and a son Dev (born 7 June 2010). The year 2012 marked his debut as the television presenter with the star Vijay game show Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi, the Tamil version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? In 2013, Suriya founded the production house 2D Entertainment.
On July 2019, Suriya criticised the draft National Education Policy (NEP) saying that it focused ‘much on entrance exams but not on quality and equal education to all the students.’
He was speaking at the 40th-anniversary function of Agaram Foundation, an educational trust which gives cash awards to board exam toppers from government schools. Later, he has issued clear statement on the new National Educational Policy.
