Sulphuric Acid Leak Detected at Sterlite Plant in Thoothukudi

On Sunday evening, a minor sulphuric acid leak was detected at one of the storage units of the sealed Sterlite copper plant, a Vedanta group company in Thoothukudi. While addressing the issue, Thoothukudi Collector Sandeep Nanduri has said, “There is no need to panic about the sulphuric acid leak as it is very minor and will be plugged.”

Even though the plant has been sealed and was not operational, company security staff and police have conducted routine inspections every day. On Saturday evening, they suspected the leak and reported it to the district administration. A special team led by Sub-Collector M.S. Prasanth, comprised District Environment Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, officials from the Revenue and Fire departments have inspected the unit and found a small quantity of sulphuric acid leakage from the godown.
The collector has also said, “Measures will be taken to evacuate the sulphuric acid from the plant, and it will take a day to complete the evacuation.” Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who attended a meeting of the NITI Aayog, has said: “the issue was under enquiry, and the government has taken all steps to ensure the closure of the Sterlite plant.”
