Sterlite Shut Down: TNPCB Orders Closure of Sterlite Plant in Thoothukudi
Sterlite Shut Down: With law and order situation worsening and 12 protesters already killed, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has ordered the closure and disconnection of power supply to Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi. According to the sources, the order to close the Sterlite plant was issued by Nasimuddin, the chairman of TNPCB on Wednesday, and the power supply to the unit was disconnected at early Thursday morning (5.15 a.m).

The order was made following an inspection carried out by Joint Chief Environmental Engineer, Tirunelveli on May 18-19, where it was found that “the unit was carrying out activities to resume its production operation.” Following that, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has ordered the closure and disconnection of electricity supply under the provisions of Section 31A of Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1971, and Section 33A of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. The copy of the order was sent to Associate Vice President of Vedanta and district collector of Thoothukudi.
