Sellur Raju was born in 1955 in Sellur, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu. In 1976, he achieved academic excellence by completing BSC degree from Thiyagarajan College, Madurai, Kamaraj University. Tamil Nadu state minister Sellur K. Raju started his political career by joining AIADMK in 2011 as incumbent Member of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly for the Madurai West constituency.

This was his first election in Madurai West constituency and he won by securing 59 percent of the vote from the people. He is the minister for Co-operation, which includes Co-operation, Statistics, and Ex-service welfare.
