Dr Sanjukta Parashar serving as an Indian Police Service officer since 2006. She is young and dynamic IPS Officer who follows the footsteps of Kiran Bedi in one of the most male-dominated profession in the world. Sanjukta is the first and only lady IPS officer in Assam. Sanjukta Parashar Profile
Sanjukta Parashar was born on 3 October 1979 in Assam. Her father Dulal Chandra Barua an engineer with the irrigation state department posted in Dibrugarh and her mother Meena Devi, who worked with the Assam Health Services. Her parents then moved to Lakhimpur where she spent two years of her early childhood before shifting to Guwahati.
She completed her Class X from Holy Child School in Guwahati and finished her Class XII from Army School, Narangi. She graduated in Political Science Honorsat from Indraprastha College for Women in New Delhi.
She realizes that US was the most important nation in the world as far as the world economy and world politics went, Sanjukta Parashar took US-ASEAN relations as the topic for her M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). She then moved to Indonesia and earned an M.Phil degree. Later, Sanjukta Parashar completed her Ph.D in US foreign policy.
Parashar was always interested in sports and often took part in various sporting events in her school days. She also learnt swimming and participated in plays and march pasts.
Sanjukta Parashar is married to Puru Gupta who is also an IAS officer in Assam and the couple often spends months apart without meeting. She also has a son and Sanjukta’s mother takes care of him in her absence.
Sanjukta Parashar Career
In 2004, Sanjukta Parashar served for a group called the Observer Research Foundation and began preparing for the Civil Services Examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission. Sanjukta Parashar had secured a high 85th All-India rank in the UPSC for selecting candidates for IAS, IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IPS and other central services.
She could have got IAS, which is generally the first choice of more women candidates. But, Sanjukta Parashar opted for IPS. In one interview, she said the reason for choosing IPS as,
“The IPS is a service that can provide instant help and aid to victims at times of distress. As such there is no parallel. And I am proud to have chosen this field.”
Parashar takes pride in her uniform and she calls herself a humble being and wants only the criminals to fear her. She born a day after Gandhi Jayanti, Sanjukta Parashar is willing to remove “ahinsha” for the sake of her duty, and does not hesitate to use firearms if it is required for the lawful performance of her official duties.
In 2008, Sanjukta Parashar, an IPS officer of the 2006 batch, was first posted as the Assistant Commandant of Makum. She was soon given the responsibility to control ethnic clashes between Bodo and illegal Bangladeshi migrants.
She is best known for taking down 16 militants, arresting over 64 criminals and seizing tons of arms and ammunition in just 15 months.
As Superintendent of Police in Sonitpur district, she leads up a team with battalion head-on armed with a loaded AK-47 of CRPF jawans in dangerous reserve forests in the terror-infested region. She has become one of the most feared police officers among Bodo militants.
