Red Alert in Tamilnadu | Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy falls
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry stating that “heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy falls likely to occur at isolated places” in these states and the Union territory on October 7 due to a severe storm in the Arabian Sea. Some places would see thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. A red alert is issued for “extremely heavy rain” with the intensity of more than 21cm. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, S Balachandran, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre said,
“A low pressure is set to form in the southeast Arabian sea on Friday. It is likely to intensify into depression and later a cyclonic storm over 36 hours and move towards Oman.”
The sea condition is also expected to be very rough from Saturday and fishermen have been warned in Tamil Nadu, south Kerala and Lakswadeep not to venture into the sea between October 5-8. Fishermen in deep sea have been advised to return to the coast by Friday.

Safety Tips During Heavy Rain
Preparing before a heavy rain:
- Prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival
- Secure your house; carry out repairs; don’t leave sharp objects loose
- Remove rotting trees/broken branches that could fall and cause damage
- Listen to radio, watch TV or read newspapers for weather updates & warnings
During Heavy Rain:
- Try to stay indoors; stay off verandas
- Unplug all electrical equipment. Don’t use corded telephones
- Don’t touch plumbing and metal pipes. Do not use running water
- Don’t take shelter near/under trees
- Stay put if you are inside a car/bus/covered vehicle
- Don’t use metallic objects; stay away from electric power/telephone lines
