Rathika Ramasamy is an Indian wildlife photographer who has been called the “first Indian woman to strike an international reputation as a wildlife photographer”. She born in a village Venkatachalapuram near Theni, a town in Southern India. She currently hails in Chennai and operates as a freelance photographer. Rathika Ramasamy Details
Rathika Ramasamy was born in Theni, Tamil Nadu, India. She was graduated in computer engineering and then completed an MBA course. She started her career as a software engineer and worked for several years. She then left her job to pursue her career in photography.
She received her first camera from her uncle, an amateur photographer himself, and began shooting pictures of trees and flowers. In 2003 she visited the Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and took pictures of birds. She then started visiting the Okhla Bird Sanctuary regularly and studied the behaviour of various types of birds. Thereafter, she took to wildlife photography as her professional interest. She has travelled to most of the National parks in India and has also been to national parks in Kenya, Africa, and Tanzania.
Her wildlife photography was presented at the “Clean Ganga Campaign” held in September 2005 at the India International Center, New Delhi. In 2007, the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s annual calendar featured her bird photographs. In 2008, the “Birds of India” chose her as one of the Top 20 best photographers of India. She is the only woman to receive the distinction. She also conducts workshops on wildlife photography and holds talks all over India. She has served on the jury panel for national and international Photography competitions. She loves to shoot Indian forest, as she believes India has one of the best Fauna & Flora. She published her “The Best of Wildlife Moments”, a photo book of wildlife moments from her collection.
In 2015, Rathika has been conferred the “Inspiring Icon Award” from the prestigious Sathyabama University, Chennai and in the same year, she has been conferred the ICF( The International Camera Fair)award for the outstanding performance and achievements in wildlife photography. Rathika is one of the juries for 4th National Photography Awards 2015, organized by Photo Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, New Delhi. In 2016 Rathika was invited to be one of the Jury for the Siena International Photo awards, and URBAN 2016 Photo Awards, Italy.
