Director Pawan Basamsetti’s directorial debut Rangabali starring Naga Shaurya and Yukti Thareja, hit the big screens today, and the reviews are mixed.

Set in Rajavaram, a village in Andhra Pradesh, the story revolves around Shaurya, a B. Pharmacy student with a daring attitude who hates working at his father’s Pharmacy but loves hanging out and drinking with his friends. He is sent to a medical college by his father, which is when he meets Sahaja, and they both fall in love. Some unfortunate events led to a conflict between Shaurya and a local politician played by Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko.

Even though it fills the story with all the overused commercial elements, the writing has a modern feel to it, which has been neatly portrayed on screen. Naga Shaurya as a middle-class youngster, is charming, but the supporting actor Satya steals the spotlight often with his impeccable comedic timing by playing the role of a sadist who enjoys listening to the despair of another person. Satya’s character was almost reminiscent of S J Suriya’s character from Spyder. Shine Tom Chacko’s acting potential was underutilized by not giving him enough moments to shine.

Putting apart the performances and writing of the movie, from a technical standpoint, the cinematography by Divarar Mani is satisfying to watch, and the editing by Karthika Srinivas is moderately spaced. On its first release day, the movie continued accumulating mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
