Puan, World’s Oldest Sumatran Orangutan Dies at Perth Zoo at the age of 62
On Monday, World’s Oldest Sumatran Orangutan named Puan has died at the Perth Zoo in Australia. Puan, aged 62, described as the “grand old lady” of Perth Zoo, was euthanised due to age-related complications. According to a statement from the authorities of Perth Zoo, “Paun left behind an ‘incredible legacy‘ of 54 descendants including 11 children and was a celebrated matriarch who helped save her species.”
Yesterday the Zoo family farewelled Puan, the oldest orangutan in the world, due to age related complications.

She had been at the zoo since 1968 and was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest of her species in 2016. Some of the Puan’s descendants have been released back into the wild in Sumatra. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), currently, there are only 14,600 Sumatran orangutans are in existence.
