P Rajagopal is the founder of Saravana Bhavan one of the largest food chains in India. He was born in Tuticorin District, Tamil Nadu. With limited education, he came to Madras (now Chennai) and started a provisions store in K K Nagar in 1973. Later he opened his first restaurant Saravana Bhavan in 1981. As of 2019, he expanded his branches to 111 restaurants in 22 countries. On the advice of an astrologer, he tried to forcefully marry one of his assistant manager’s daughters Jeevajothi as his third wife. But she was already married to Santhakumar so she refused.
But he tortured Jeevajothi and her family by even attempting to murder Prince Santhakumar. In 2001 he successfully orchestrated the murder of her husband Santhakumar and his body was found later in a resort town in the Western Ghats mountain range. In 2009, he was sentenced to life in prison by Madras High Court. But he was freed on bail due to some health reasons. He later appeared at the Indian Supreme Court, However, the judgment came against him by changing the prison term to a life sentence.
Rajagopal had a heart attack on 13 July 2019, so the Chennai High court transferred him to Vijaya Hospital in Chennai, but he died on the morning of 18 July 2019. Recently, filmmaker TJ Gnanavel directing a movie based on Rajagopal and Jeevajothi’s life incident titled Dosa King.
