OYO Rooms History

OYO Rooms was founded by Ritesh Agarwal who was the first resident Indian to be awarded the Peter Thiel Fellowship. The network started with a single hotel at one city in Gurgaon in January 2013. From May 2013 to September 2017, the network covers around 70,000 Rooms in 8,500 hotels across 230 towns of India. The team aims to become the network as the world’s most loved hotel brand.

OYO Rooms currently operates in India & Malaysia with over 200+ locations including Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur. OYO Rooms presence includes major metros, regional hubs, top leisure destinations and pilgrimage towns.

He has just raised $20 million (Rs 125 crore) from San Francisco-based Greenoaks Capital and existing investors Sequoia, DSG Consumer Partners, and LightSpeed Ventures. Later, the company hires 100-employee with a $100 million valuation.

In May 2013, Ritesh Agarwal launched Oravel Stays website which designed to enable listing and booking of budget accommodation. He researched for three months by staying in over 100 bed and breakfasts, guest houses, and small hotels. Later, Agarwal changed Oravel to OYO in the same year. OYO partners with hotels to give similar experiences across cities. He was awarded $100,000 over two years by the Peter Thiel Fellowship to create a start-up. Ritesh pivoted to a new business model titled Oyo Rooms, a marketplace for branded budget hotels in Southeast Asia.

Oyo Rooms is an Indian virtual hospitality brand. It aggregates budget hotels and guesthouses, making inventory discoverable and bookable online. Its branding provides a franchise-like consistency of the product. It’s a managed marketplace of properties.

OYO Rooms Career

Oyo Rooms received seed funding in the year 2012. This was followed in July 2013 by more seed funding from the world’s leading investors including the Lightspeed Venture Partners (LSVP), SoftBank Group, Greenoaks Capital, Sequoia Capital and DSG Consumer Partners. In May 2014, the network received about $650,000 from Sequoia Capital and LSVP at a pre-money valuation of $60 million.
