NewBorn Baby Cries: In a bizarre case of negligence, a 700-gram newborn girl baby that was declared dead in the government hospital began to cry while being taken home to get her ‘last rites’ done.

The pleasantly-surprised relatives then hurried back to get the ‘dead’ baby admitted. As the newborn girl lay motionless for a while, the nurses in the Government Hospital declared and told the relatives that the baby died as she was born the low birth weight.

The incident happened on Wednesday when Mariya Vinitha, the wife of a coolie, bore an underweight baby at the Government Headquarters Hospital in Dindigul, TamilNadu. The next day, the condition of the baby turned critical, and she was referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

On hearing about the incident, Dr Malathi, a joint director of the government hospital and some Medical Officers conducted an inquiry with the nurses and other staffs to find out who had reported that the baby was dead and how it was possible for the Vinitha’s relatives to take the newborn home without following due procedure.

The officials said an inquiry would also be held with the Vinitha’s relatives to establish the sequence of events.
