Nambi Narayanan is an Indian scientist and aerospace engineer. He has worked as a senior official at the Indian Space Research Organisation as an in-charge of the cryogenics division. In the year 1994, Nambi Narayanan was wrongly charged for espionage of important data. Then in the year 1996, the charge against him was dismissed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (C.B.I.), and in 1998, the Supreme Court of India has declared that he was not found guilty. On July 01, 2022, Nambi Narayanan’s biographical movie “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” based on his life story was released. It is available on the popular OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.

Early Life and Career

Nambi Narayanan was born on1941 in Kerala. His family details will be updated soon. He completed his schooling in DVD Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu and finished his graduation in Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai and further pursued post-graduation from Princeton University, New Jersey. While A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s team was working on solid motors, Nambi Narayanan introduced liquid fuel rocket technology in India in the early 1970s. He predicted the need for the liquid-fuelled engines for ISRO’s future civilian space programs. His activity was encouraged by the ISRO chairman Satish Dhawan. In the mid-1970s, he successfully designed the first thrust liquid propellant motors of 600 kg.

In the year 1992, India made an agreement with Russia for the transfer of technology to develop cryogenic-based fuels. The agreement was signed for Rs 235 crore when the US and France offered the same technology for Rs 950 crore and Rs 650 crore respectively. Then the deal was canceled due to the pressure created by the US president George H. W. Bush. To solve this issue, India signed a new agreement with Russia to manufacture four cryogenic engines by floating a global tender without a formal transfer of technology. Earlier, ISRO has made an agreement with Kerala Hitech Industries Limited (Keltch) and it has provided the cheapest tender for fabricating engines. But the deal was canceled due to the spy scandal that surfaced in late 1994.

Nambi Narayanan worked for two decades, with French assistance, and developed an engine named Vikas engine, which is used by several ISRO rockets including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle(PSLV), which took Chandrayaan-1 to the moon in the year 2008. Then the engine is used on the second stage of PSLV and as the second and the four strap-on stages of Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). In the year 1994, Nambi Narayanan was wrongly charged for leaking vital defense secrets with the two alleged Maldivian intelligence officers named Mariam Rasheeda and Fauzia Hassan. The defense officials said that the secrets pertained highly confidential as it is “flight test data” collected from experiments with rocket and satellite launches.

He was accused of selling ISRO secrets for millions and he was jailed for 50 days. While he was in jail, he was interrogated by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials and the two IB officials asked him to implicate A.E. Muthunayagam with his boss but he refused. So he was tortured until he collapsed and was hospitalized. In the year 1996, the charge was dismissed by the Central Bureau of Investigation as he was not found guilty. In 1998, the Supreme Court of India dismissed the case. In the year 2001, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the Kerala State Government to pay him a compensation of ₹1 crore. In the same year, he got retired. The Kerala High Court ordered a compensation amount of Rs 10 lakhs to Nambi Narayanan. On 7 November 2013, he made a discussion with the media that he is seeking justice in that case and he wants to expose who was behind this plot. In the year 2018, he got a compensation of Rs 50 lakh from Dipak Misra for the “mental cruelty.” The life story of Nambi Narayanan was filmed as “Rocketry – The Nambi Effect” in the year 2018.
