Nakkeeran Gopal Arrested after Complaint from Governor’s Office

Tamil magazine Nakkeeran’s editor Gopal was arrested in Chennai for allegedly defaming Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit in his articles in the Nirmala Devi case. He was taken into Sindharipettai Police station from Chennai airport after the Raj Bhavan complained against the magazine’s reporting on the alleged s*x scandal at Madurai Kamaraj University.

The cover story of the Nakkheeran magazine showed the pictures of Nirmala Devi, an accused in the ‘s*x for cash’ scam and the Governor. The story said that Nirmala Devi had told CB CID which is investigating the case that she had met the Governor Banwarilal Purohit four times. The cover had questioned why the Governor has not been made part of the inquiry.

According to reports, the arrest was allegedly made on a complaint given by Governor Banwarilal Purohit accusing Gopal of defaming him in his cover. The police sources say that FIR will be filed under section 124 under IPC. This section pertains to assaulting the President or Governor with intent to compel or restrain the exercise of any lawful power.

Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor in Devangar Arts College in Virudhunagar district was arrested in April for allegedly luring students to provide se*ual favours to senior varsity officials. Along with her,  V Murugan, an assistant professor, was also accused of working with Nirmala Devi to lure young women.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit has denied having any link with Nirmala Devi. He has ordered an inquiry into the scandal by retired Indian Administrative Service officer R Santhanam.
