Matthew Rhys was born on 8 November 1974 in Cardiff, Wales, U.K. His parents Glyn, a headmaster, and Helen Evans, a teacher. He has an older sister, Rachael, who is a BBC broadcaster journalist. He did his primary education at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd in Whitchurch, Cardiff. He then attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Cardiff. In 1993, he received the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship in RADA. There he appeared in the BBC police series Back-Up and House of America. Later, he moved back to Cardiff and started acted in a Welsh movie Bydd yn Wrol (Be Brave) for which he won Best Actor at the Bafta Cymru.

Matthew Rhys made his acting debut in 1999 American-British movie, Titus, directed by Julie Taymor. In the following year, he featured on BBC documentary series, A History of Britain, presented by Simon Schama. In 2001, he played a role as Edward Malone in Stuart Orme’s The Lost World. He then appeared in several movies like The Abduction Club, Love and Other Disasters, The Scapegoat, and More. Currently, he is working on an American television series, Girls which aired on HBO. Moreover, his upcoming flick movie is Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and You Are My Friend.
