‘Make In India’ Yet To Spur Manufacturing, Says Panel

The Parliament’s Standing Committee on Commerce had raised the question that why the country’s manufacturing growth is low, despite initiatives such as Make In India, Startup India and FDI reforms running more than two years old.

BJP MP Bhupender Yadav is the one who is leading the committee, and he had shown concerns about low manufacturing growth and reported the averaging calculation in The table of Parliament. A report says that, from 2015-16, just 1.6% of manufacturing growth in the five years and for first nine months of FY17, there is 0.5% contraction in the sector.

On Wednesday, an action is taken for the report tabled in Parliament, the department of industrial policy and promotion, under the ministry of commerce and industry, has listed out the various steps that should be taken by the government to promote manufacturing and ease the business environment.

The department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) says that,

“Make in India initiative aims to make India a hub for manufacturing, design and innovation… Startup India initiative aims to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation to drive sustainable economic growth and generate large scale employment opportunities,”.

The DIPP also listed out various steps for the FDI policy to change the India by making it an investor-friendly destination, along with the focus on raising up physical infrastructure and easing the process of obtaining clearances for businesses.

The committee stressed while expressing appreciation for the measures enumerated by the government that,

“However, it will serve better to remember that most of these initiatives are now more than two years old and the manufacturing growth has not yet gone to the desired level.”

The committee also requested the department to take effective steps to implement initiatives such as Make in India in a ‘more robust manner’, and protect from all restrictions to the ‘optimal implementation’ of such programs must be cleared in a time-bound manner.
