The Kentia Palm is one of the beautiful and famous indoor palm plants which holds the native of Lord Howe Island located in Australia. The scientific name of the species is Howea Forsteriana. It is a flowering plant species under the palm family Arecaceae in the order Arecales. The plant is popular for growing as indoor plants, but in tropical regions, it can be grown outdoor. Apart from Lord Howe Island, it is also widely grown in Norfolk Island. These plants can grow without hesitation as garden plants or street trees in some areas of southern Australia and northern New Zealand.

The Kentia Palm can grow up to the height of 10 m tall, and 6 m wide then the fronds of the tree can reach up to 3 m long. It is popularly called as thatch palm, sentry palm or paradise palms. The trunk of the plant is tan in the sun, but in shades, it maintains a beautiful green colour. It is not a single trunk species, and the leaves of the plant hide the trunks. The old leaves of the plant will fall naturally while growing and you can see the marks of the fallen leaf in its trunk.

  • The Kentia Palm is a relatively slow-growing palm plant, and it will take over five years to reach the height of 5 to 10 feet tall in indoor.
  • Even the plants can adapt the full sun, but they prefer to grow in partial shades. Moreover, it cannot tolerate overheat and high cold. It cannot survive in 100°F of direct sun and -5 °C of cold.
  • It produces 3.5-foot long inflorescence which has white blooms with 3-7 spikes. Both sexes exist in the same inflorescence. The fruit of the plant is in red colour and takes 15 years to grow.
  • While growing the plant in indoor, you have to follow some instructions. This plant needs slightly moist soil and has to water the plant when 1 or 2 inches of the topsoil is dry. Then make sure the soil is dry to avoid root rot.
  • According to the research of ASPCA, the Kentia Palm is a non-toxic plant, and it will not affect any home pets like dogs and cats.
  • The World Conservation Union has marked the plant as a vulnerable species. To save the breed, they cultivate it on the Lord Howe Island and collect the seeds to germinate them for export as an ornamental garden plant.
  • The indoor plant can grow in the temperature of 65°f – 75°f is ideal and not less than 55°f.
