Muthuvel Karunanidhi Kanimozhi is an Indian politician, poet, and journalist. Kanimozhi entered politics when she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of India’s Parliament), representing Tamil Nadu in the year 2007. She belongs to Dravida Munnetra Kazhalagam (DMK) party and was the chief of art, Literature and Rationalism wing of DMK. M. K. Kanimozhi was born on 5 January 1968 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Kanimozhi is the only daughter of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu Karunanidhi and his third wife, Rajathi Ammal. M. K. Kanimozhi is seen as her father’s “literary heir” and was a student of Church Park Convent, Chennai. Later she got Masters degree in Economics at Ethiraj College for Women.

Before entering politics, Kanimozhi worked as sub-editor for The Hindu and as editor of Kungumam and feature editor for Tamil Murasu. She has written several film songs and Tamil poetry.

She was married twice first in 1989 to Athiban Bose and then to G. Aravindan in 1997 and has one son. Her literary works include Sigarangalil Uraikiradhu Kaalam, Agathinai, Paarvaigal, Raaja, Karukum Marudhaani, and Karuvarai Vaasanai.

M. K. Kanimozhi Political Career

M. K. Kanimozhi takes part in organizing empowerment programs for women and supports the cause of transgenders and differently-abled people. She leads the efforts of DMK in organizing job fairs thus improving the employment opportunity for youngsters from small towns and villages.

In May 2007, the DMK nominated Kanimozhi as one of the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha. She took oath as Rajya Sabha member along with A. Raja.

She was caught up in several controversies in 2010. Radia tapes controversy and 2G spectrum scam are most noted cases. She was accused of the co-conspirator of A.Raja. He was the Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the 2G wireless spectrum allocations at that time.

M.K. Kanimozhi was ordered to be arrested on May 20, 2011, by the CBI court in New Delhi. As her bail request was rejected, she remains under the Judicial Custody in Tihar Jail expecting trial as of today.
