Indian Olympic Association To Host 2022 Commonwealth Games As Durban Gave Up

Indian Olympic Association To Host 2022 Commonwealth Games As Durban Gave Up

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has expressed its desire to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after Durban gave up hosting rights as the South African government has failed to provide financial guarantees for the event. India is likely to throw its hat in the ring for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

A senior IOA official has said that they were weighing the options of stepping in as a replacement for Durban which was stripped of the quadrennial event on Monday if the government lends its support. It has come a day after Durban had to give up the hosting rights. The CGF (Commonwealth Games Federation) has begun its hunt for an alternative replacement host city and invited bids.

Rajeev Mehta, the IOA Secretary General, said as quoted “We had received a communication from CGF. The IOA President and Members are discussing the issue. If the government supports then we will consider the possibility of bidding for the Games,” he added. The CWG in 2010 was last hosted by India an event that is as much remembered for corruption charges and mismanagement as it is for the country’s phenomenal success at several jam-packed sporting arenas.

Mehta also pointed out that things have changed over the years. He said that the successful conduct of the South Asian Games on a shoestring budget in Guwahati and Shillong last year was a case in point. The game was held under the direct supervision of the government, which controlled the finances, while the IOA provided the technical support.

While there is no time-frame specified yet for the countries to submit their bid, Mehta said he would meet the IOA president N Ramachandran to decide the future course of action. Three years before, the IOA had expressed its desire to host the 2019 Asian Games. The government had also backed the proposal, but the country could not meet the deadline to submit the bid.

Mehta ensured that the things have now changed for good in India and cited India’s successful hosting of the South Asian Games held in Shillong and Guwahati in 2016 as citing an example. Australia, which would be hosting the 2018 edition in Gold Coast, has said that it is willing to host the Games again in 2022, while English cities Birmingham and Liverpool also have come forward to replace Durban. India will now have to compete with the likes of Australia, as well as Liverpool and Birmingham, who are also keen on replacing Durban as the host city for the 2022 Games.
