Gunjan Saxena was an Indian Air Force Personnel, who is the first women combat worked along with lieutenant Srividya Rajan. Moreover, she was the first women who entered into the war zone of Kargil in the year 1999. Gunjan Saxena and Srividya Rajan has broken the criteria and became a first women IAF officer to fly in a combat zone. Gunjan Saxena is often referred to as a Kargil Girl.

Early Life and Career

Gunjan Saxena was born on 4 June 1972 in New Delhi, India. Gunjan Saxena family and schooling details are not known. She completed her graduation in Hansraj College & University of Delhi. As she was born and brought up in the army background, she has decided to join in the armed force. Gunjan Saxena has got married to an IAF officer, who is the pilot of Indian Air Force Mi-17 Helicopter. The couple has a daughter named Pragya, who was born in the year 2004.

Gunjan Saxena has got a chance to join in the first women’s batch of IAF trainee pilots. She cleared Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) examination and appointed in the IAF as a pilot. Gunjan Saxena started her career in the year 1994 as an IAF officer along with 25 women trainee pilots and she was posted in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. Gunjan Saxena and Srividya Rajan have waited for an opportunity to serve for the country and they got a chance in the year 1999 when the Kargil war broke out between India and Pakistan. In that war, they conducted two operations they are Operation Vijay and Operation Safed Sagar. In that Gunjan Saxena was associated with Operation Vijay. Then she ended her career in the year 2004. For her outstanding service in the war zone, she was honoured with Shaurya Chakra Award by the army and she was the first women who received this award.
