Government Bans 328 Tablet’s Including Saridon and Panderm | Complete List of Banned 328 FDC’s

The Ministry of Health has banned the production, sale, and distribution of 328 FDC drugs (Fixed-Dose Combination Drugs). The ban on 328 FDC’s will bring an end to the long legal fight between the drug manufactures and the ministry. The battle was started in 2016 when the ministry has called for these ‘unsafe” drugs to be banned. With this ban, nearly 6,000 drug brands are expected to be affected. The popular brands which are going to get affected by this ban are Saridon (painkiller), Panderm (skin cream), Lupidiclox (antibiotic), Corex (cough syrup), Gluconorm PG (Diabetes Drug) and much more.

In March 2016, the central government had banned 344 Fixed-dose combination drugs and the manufactures of those drugs had contested the ban in the high court and Supreme court. On December 15, 2017, the Supreme court has asked Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) to examine the matter and the board has concluded the matter by saying that there was no therapeutic justification for the ingredients in 328 FDC drugs. Hence the board recommended the government to ban them. The Supreme Court has added that the remaining FDCs from the original list couldn’t be banned as they have been manufactured since 1988. However, the court has also told the ministry that they will look into the safety of these 15 drugs by initiating a fresh investigation if it wanted to ban them.

Complete List of Banned FDC’s in India 2018

All India Drug Action Network has welcomed the ban and sought swift action from the center on the excluded FDC drugs. In a statement, AIDAN has said, “The banned Fixed-dose combination drugs account for nearly Rs 2,500 crore and it represents only the tip of the iceberg. In our estimate, the market for unsafe and problematic FDC drugs in India is at least one-fourth of the total pharma market which is valued at Rs 1.3 Trillion.” It sought a review of all FDC drugs available in the market in the interest of patient safety as recommended by the Kokate Committee, a committee which is constituted by the Health ministry to examine the FDC Drugs. Since then, some of the large drug manufacturers have claimed that over the last couple of years they have either phased out those FDCs or changed the combination.

By welcoming the Ban, Deepnath Roy Chowdhury, the president of pharma lobby group, Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA) said, “The FDC issue has gone through the legal process and the Honourable Supreme Court has given its verdict. As a citizen of India, we respect the verdict. Indian Drug Manufacturers Association is a responsible body and has never supported irrational FDCs but we do believe in the advantages of patient convenience & compliance that FDCs provide.”
