Bilkis Bano is an Indian woman from Gujarat who is the victim of gang rape by Hindu terrorists during the 2002 Gujarat Riot. She was 5 months pregnant at that time. Moreover, 14 of her family members were killed, including her 3 years old girlchild. She appealed for exemplary compensation while refusing to accept the Gujarat government offer of Rs 5 lakh.
On 18th October, the Centre approved the release of convicts in two weeks, revealing the Gujarat government’s affidavit to the supreme court.
In 2004, the Supreme court transferred this case to CBI. In 2008, a special court ordered lifetime imprisonment for 11 violators for rape and murder. The High court in 2017 convicted 5 policemen and 2 doctors who were alleged of supporting violators and destroying the evidence.
In April 2019, the Supreme court ordered to block the retirement pension for 4 retired policemen and de-promote the fifth policemen (IPS) who did not investigate the case properly. The Supreme court also ordered Gujarat Government to provide 50 lakh compensation and a government job to Bilkis.
Later, all 11 men arrested in the gang rape case were released on 15th August 2022 (Monday) from Godhra Jail. The Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.
