Asaram Rape Case Verdict: Godman Sentenced to Life Imprisonment Till Death
Asaram Rape Case Verdict: Almost five years after rape charges were levelled against the self-styled godman, Asaram Bapu. Today, Jodhpur Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Court awarded life imprisonment to Asaram Bapu till death and two others, who co-accused got 20-years term. The judgement was pronounced inside the Jodhpur Central Jail. The charges levelled against Asaram Bapu involves raping a minor girl, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement, sexual harassment and criminal conspiracy. Asaram Bapu, who is currently sentenced in the Jodhpur Central Jail, was facing trial in two sexual assault cases: one in Gujarat and the other in Rajasthan.

In Rajasthan, a teenage girl from Shahajahanpur of Uttar Pradesh had accused Asaram Bapu of raping her Bapuhis Ashram in Manai Village near Jodhpur on the night of August 15, 2013. While in Gujarat, the two Surat-based sisters had filed two separate complaints against the Godman and his son Narayan Sai. Asaram Bapu had lodged some bail petitions, a total of 12 requests were rejected by the trial court, Rajasthan Court and the Supreme Court.
He was taken into police custody on August 2013, and then he was taken to Jodhpur Central Jail. A potency test was conducted on him and produced before a Jodhpur Court. In the following years, some key witnesses in this case were attacked or went missing. Asaram Bapu’s aide was shot dead in 2014, while another associate was killed in 2015 at Muzaffarnagar.
Following the judgement, the Jodhpur police have imposed section 144 in the Jodhpur city until April 30, and Union Home Ministry has issued an advisory for Rajasthan and the nearby states of Gujarat and Haryana. Yesterday, Jodhpur Court dismissed the petition seeking the entry of media persons in Central Jail of Jodhpur for the coverage of Asaram Bapu Rape case verdict.
