Amid COVID-19 & Cyclone, India Bracing Up for Locust Attack
Locust Attack News: Amid coronavirus crisis and cyclone disaster, India is now battling with the desert locust that destroys the livelihoods of people in the agricultural supply chain. Currently, the locust enters India in specific in the parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Reportedly, 16 districts in Rajasthan, 17 districts in UP and Madhya Pradesh are affected due to locust attack. It is one of the worst attacks in 27 years. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), these desert locusts are breeding 400 times than usual due to the climatic conditions. It also states that 40 million locusts can eat as much food as 35,000 people in a day, assuming that one person consumes around 2.3 kg of food per day.
Rajasthan State government stated that 38,308 hectares (i.e.,22 out of 33 districts) are under a locust attack.
As per FAO, the locust swarm is affecting Iran, Pakistan, India, and the Horn of Africa. The Organization also added that Kenya and Iran are facing the worst locust crisis in over 70 years.
