Aadi Perukku is the Aadi monsoon festival celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil Month of Adi (mid-July to mid-August). Aadi Perukku is also called as “Aadi 18” or “Padinettam Perukku” and the day pays tribute to the water’s life-sustaining properties in Tamil Nadu. On this day, various God deities will be organized to shower the Nature’s bountiful grace on human beings. Aadi Perukku festival coincides with the annual freshes of the rivers and to pay tribute to the water’s life-sustaining properties.
In Tamil Nadu, Aadi month marks the start of the monsoon season and the level of the water in the river will increase significantly during this month. Hence, the Aadi month is considered to be the favourable month for farmers to root, sow and to plant sees and other forms of vegetation. Hence Padinettam Perukku is celebrated to express the gratitude to Nature and also to thank Cauvery River. Moreover, the festival will be celebrated near water tanks, river basins, wells and lakes around the Tamil Nadu.

Celebrations on Aadi Perukku
- On this day, Women’s will workship Goddess Parvati and various forms of rice dishes will be prepared and offered to the Goddess. Some of the commonly prepared rice dishes are coconut rice, curd rice, sweet Pongal, bahala rice, tamarind rice and lemon rice. The devotees around the Tamil Nadu will worship the sacred river mother Cauvery with the flowers, Akshata and rice offerings.
- Aadi Perukku festival is celebrated mainly by the families living on the banks of Cauvery River. A special lamp will be prepared by using jaggery and rice flour. Then the lamp will be placed on the mango leaves. to which a yellow thread, flowers and turmeric will be added. Then the map will be lit by the women’s and it will be floated in the river.
- On the auspicious day of Padinettam Perukku, a special rice preparation known as “Kalandha Sadham” will be prepared and the devotees with their family will eat the feast along the banks of the rivers.
- On this day, sons-in-law’s will be invited and gifted with new clothes.
