Auto Shankar Web Series Review | A ZEE5 Tamil Original Series about Dreaded Gangster
ZEE5 recently released their new Tamil original series. The show is based on the terrifying real incidents that happened during the late 1980s and early 1990s in Chennai. It mainly showcases the real-life story of the dreaded gangster Auto Shankar who terrorised South Chennai. To witness the chilling story, watch the gripping series Auto Shankar on ZEE5.
Directed by debutant Ranga and written by Mani G, this Tamil web series comprises of 10 episodes. The first two episodes of Auto Shankar narrates the story of the titular notorious criminal – how he started out and became the most sought-after gangster. Auto Shankar aka Gowri Shankar’s world is filled with violence, s*x, profanity, and excesses. He will murder brutally and bury the victim’s bodies inside a residential house. The law finally caught up to him and Auto Shankar was hanged in the year 1995 for six brutal murders.
Shankar’s link with police and politicians is clearly portrayed in the series. In the end, ruthless power politicians and corrupt cops frame Shankar and his gang. The web series has been facing some criticism for its explicit content. Before the series, Shankar’s life has inspired television shows and the Tamil movie Pulan Visaranai, which was released in 1990. But, the writer of the series Mani G has closely researched the serial killer’s life from Shankar’s family, friends and neighbours, creating a more in-depth glimpse into the killer’s life.
Coming to the cast, Appani Sarath of Angamaly Diaries fame plays the role of eponymous serial killer Gowri Shankar. Sources said that after he was selected to play this terrific role, Sarath put on some weight and learnt about Shankar’s mannerism.
Sarath earlier worked in Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, and Lingusamy’s Sandakozhi 2. To provide a local Madras slang, Paval Navageethan of Vada Chennai fame lends his voice for Sarath. In an interview, the Malayalam actor said that he enjoys playing intense roles like ‘Auto Shankar’. He also added that the series gave him immense satisfaction as an actor.
Also, the supporting characters like police officer Kathiravan (Arjun Chidambaram) and prostitute turned Shankar’s love interest, Chandrika (Swayam) and Saranya Ravi as Shankar’s wife have delivered solid performances that will stay in your mind. The supporting cast also includes Selva Pandian, Rajesh Dev, Praveen, Augustin, and Vasudha.
Director Ranga narrates the story with some catchy and promising dialogues like, “kaththi eduthavanukku kaththi la dhaan saavu”, and “Close pannalaam nu mudivu panniteenga la”.
Overall, the series is raw, gripping, bold and certainly an edgy web series for Tamil. Moreover, it is realistic in terms of scenes, presentation and language. The series also tells some unknown facts about the life of the character.
Auto Shankar is produced by Tridents Arts Digital in association with Baby Shoe Productions. Music director Arrol Correlli has scored the background while Manoj Parahamsa and Saravanan have handled the camera. Also the producer of the series, Manoj Paramahamsa has worked in several well-known films like Vinaithaandi Varuvaaya (2010), Nanban (2012) and Eeram (2009).
