Two peoples died, and several were missing as a bridge that connecting the Sanvordem and Curchorem village in South Goa district that Goa bridge collapsed on Thursday. By luck, the sufferers were who standing on the broken bridge and watching the operation to rescue a youth who apparently jumped into the river to commit suicide.
The Portuguese-era bridge that built across the river Sanvordem, this is the stream of river Zuari, it’s closed for traffic for last four years.
At the time when fire and emergency service personnel are busy in rescuing the youth, nearly 50 people were watching their effort from the bridge while watching the rescue bridge gave way and, all fell into the river.
The Police officials said that nearly 20 of them swam to the safety. The another 14 peoples were rescued and taken them to the nearest hospital, and the two bodies retrieved from the river.
“More people are feared to have been trapped under the collapsed portion of the bridge,” a police officer said.
The divers from the Indian Navy and the Drishti Lifeguard Services and the private agencies provides lifeguard for their state’s beaches, and they also called for the rescue operation.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said to the reporters that all concerned agencies had forced into the action.
Huge search and rescue operation is going on yet now. And also he stated that we still don’t have the exact count of the people in the water.
The Navy spokesperson said there are nearly nine Navy divers with Gemini boats have rushed to the Curchorem. And he said the rescue operation is expected to continue till night.
PWD minister Sudin Dhavalikar who hurried to the site and stated that the bridge closed it is not in use for past four years.
“People who were keen on witnessing the rescue operation for youth who had jumped into the river to commit suicide removed the barricades on the bridge,”-PWD minister Sudin Dhavalikar.
Meantime, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he spoke to Parrikar about the bridge collapse reports.
