Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will coincide Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday at 6 PM in Delhi to discuss the contentious Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, it is learned. “The issue related to SYL canal is on top of the agenda of Chief Minister who will also participate in NITI Ayog Summit on April 23,” government sources said, pointing out the Chief Minister. The chief minister solicited an appointment with the PM to apprise him about Haryana’s attitude on the river water-sharing dispute with the neighboring Punjab.
The declaration to meet Modi comes close on the heels of Punjab and Haryana reiterating their “stated positions” in distributing meetings held by the Centre in New Delhi on the SYL Canal issue on Thursday. While Punjab demanded that a tribunal is set up for re-assessment of water in the Ravi-Beas basin as the state had no water to spare, Haryana had urged the Centre to construct the remaining portion of SYL canal in Punjab of the territory at the earliest to carry its share of river waters.
A day after Punjab said the Centre that it had no water to share with its neighbors, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is set to meet PM Narendra Modi on Saturday in New Delhi to discuss Satluj-Yamuna Link(SYL) trench issue.

Last week Punjab CM Amarinder Singh had greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announced decision to hold a meeting of Punjab and Haryana governments on April 20 to resolve the canal issue. However, on Thursday, Punjab chief secretary (CS) Karan Avtar Singh told Union water reserves secretary Amarjit Singh that the state faced a critical situation itself and could not distribute any water with Haryana.The Supreme Court had also proposed Punjab and Haryana to settle the SYL dispute amicably on April 20. The case is next programmed to come up for hearing in the apex court on April 27.
On Saturday, beyond the river water issue, the Chief Minister is also expected to estimate Modi about “successful implementation” of the central government’s systems in Haryana. Khattar’s media advisor Amit Arya told that the roots of this conference lay in the recently held working committee meeting of BJP in Bhuvneshwar wherein the CM had discussed certain issues, including the SYL.
“As of now, SYL is the biggest problem to be taken up with the Prime Minister. The Chief Minister will put Haryana’s case before him. Besides, he shall also attend the meeting on Niti Ayog,” said Arya. Khattar would also update the PM about important decisions taken by the government so far, he added.
The meeting is also meaningful given that 47 of the 18 BJP MLAs in Haryana have been waging a pragmatic war against the Khattar government. Various of the dissenting MLAs meetings with the party top brass have been planned but canceled in the past few months. Also, PM Modi is also set to chair a meeting of all chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states on Sunday.
